 Students learn from financial aid pros at College Goal Sunday

  (Hartford, CT, July 31, 2009) – The start of the new year represents new resolutions, high hopes, and for college students and their parents throughout the nation, time to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This year, prospective students and parents are invited to attend College Goal Sunday on January 31, 2010, where financial aid administrators will offer free assistance in completing the FAFSA.

College Goal Sunday will take place at twelve different sites throughout Connecticut which include Capital Community College (Hartford), Central High School (Bridgeport), Eastern Connecticut State University (Willimantic), Gateway Community College (New Haven), Manchester Community College (Manchester), Middlesex Community College (Middletown), Norwalk Community College, Norwich Free Academy, Ridley-Lowell Business and Technology Institute, Sacred Heart University, Science and Technology Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut, and Western Connecticut State University. In addition to receiving assistance in filling out the FAFSA, participants will receive general information regarding state and federal financial aid programs. The event begins at 1:30 p.m., and all participants will have a chances to win a scholarship. In order to complete the FAFSA, those attending should bring their driver's license, social security number, previous year's W-2 forms, student and parents' recent Federal Income Tax return, current bank statements, untaxed income records for previous year, current business records and information and proof of citizenship.

College Goal Sunday was created by the Indiana Student Financial Aid Association with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc. and supplemental support from the Lumina Foundation for Education. The College Goal Sunday program in Connecticut was created by the CT Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (CAPFAA) and the CT Association of Educational Opportunities Programs (CAEOP). With the approval of a three-year grant from the Lumina Foundation for Education, College Goal Sunday was able to be established to assist students and parents in Connecticut .

“By attending a College Goal Sunday event, participants will receive free hands on assistance in completing the FAFSA, and will walk away from the event with a completed financial aid application and the satisfaction of knowing they have accomplished one of the biggest steps in getting ready to go to college,” said Ivette Rivera-Dreyer, Connecticut College Goal Sunday coordinator.

College Goal Sunday High School Announcement  

Seniors… if you plan to go to to college in the fall, now is the time for you to begin working on your college financial aid application.  There’s a new program here in Connecticut called College Goal Sunday that you need to know about.

College Goal Sunday is a free program to help you and your family in the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  On Sunday, January 31, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. volunteers from Connecticut college financial aid offices and community agencies will be available at different sites in CT. They will help you with your FAFSA and make sure that applying for financial aid does not become an obstacle that could keep you from going to college. The sites are:
